The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has expressed its appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s recent Executive Order aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s healthcare sector. According to a statement by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director General of NAFDAC, the Executive Order introduces special waivers on pharmaceutical inputs, APIs, excipients, and essential raw materials, heralding a new era for healthcare development in the country.

Prof. Adeyeye highlighted the Order’s pivotal role in fostering local production of healthcare products, reducing costs, and enhancing accessibility to essential medical supplies. This strategic move is part of the broader Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, designed to tackle longstanding challenges and elevate healthcare standards nationwide.

The initiative includes provisions for zero tariffs and excise duties on specified pharmaceutical items, along with waivers for crucial raw materials, aiming to lower the prices of medicines and promote local manufacturing. By streamlining regulatory processes and fostering market stability through framework contracts, the Order seeks to bolster Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, improve service delivery, and fortify the country’s resilience against future health crises.

Prof. Adeyeye commended the collaborative efforts of stakeholders and recognized the proactive leadership of Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate and Dr. Tunji Alausa in advancing this transformative healthcare agenda. She emphasized that President Tinubu’s Executive Order underscores a robust commitment to healthcare reform, positioning Nigeria for a sustainable and high-quality healthcare system accessible to all citizens.
