Written by on June 29, 2024

Tragedy struck on Saturday morning June 29th, 2024 as one person was confirmed dead in a collision involving a mini truck (MUS 489 XS) and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD) on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The incident, attributed to excessive speeding during a heavy downpour, occurred near the Unilag waterfront, heading towards Iyana-Oworonsoki.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which swiftly responded to the scene, three others were rescued amidst the chaotic aftermath. Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, expressed concern over the incident despite ongoing efforts to enforce speed limits under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

State authorities, including the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) and LASTMA, promptly handled the situation, clearing the accident vehicles to restore traffic flow on the bridge. Mr. Giwa extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged all motorists, whether commercial or private, to adhere strictly to speed limits for the safety of all road users across Lagos State.
