The Federal Government has introduced a roadmap aimed at reducing plastic pollution in Nigeria, with hopes that private investors will support plastic waste management initiatives.
At the launch in Abuja, hosted by the Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) and the Federal Ministry of Environment, Environment Minister Balarabe Lawal emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to building a circular economy, remarking on the country’s pressing need to manage its growing plastic waste. He stated, This is where we can stimulate job creation, foster the establishment of micro, small and medium-scale enterprises, and attract private sector investment, including foreign direct investment through building the necessary infrastructure for the plastic economy.
Lawal noted Nigeria’s involvement since February 2021 with the Global Plastic Action Partnership, being the first African country to join. He added that last May, the ministry and GPAP established the Nigerian International Plastic Action Partnership to collaborate across sectors on sustainable solutions for plastic waste.
Clemence Schmid, Director of Global Plastic Action Partnership at WEF, acknowledged NPAP’s work in bringing together various stakeholders to achieve impact-proof multi-stakeholder action. She added, Today’s event represents more than just a launch. It is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to forging a cleaner and more sustainable future for Nigeria.
