Ogun Monarch Dismisses 10 Chiefs Over Alleged Unauthorized Land Sales

The Olu of Orile Ilawo, Abeokuta, Oba Alexander MacGregor, has dismissed 10 chiefs for allegedly selling 1,600 acres of community land in Alagbagba and surrounding areas of Odeda Local Government, Ogun State, without proper authorization. Among those dismissed are Chief Oluwole Dosunmu, Chief Abraham Soyoye, and Fatai Sodimu.
Speaking from his palace on Saturday, Oba MacGregor expressed frustration over the chiefs’ disregard for his authority, accusing them of acting in self-interest rather than representing the Ilawo community. The monarch emphasized that the sale of communal land should require his consent, stressing, “These chiefs have been selling land without my authorization, depriving our people of their rightful heritage.”
Oba MacGregor also underscored the historical autonomy of the Ilawo stool, predating Abeokuta’s founding in 1830, and warned the dismissed chiefs against using titles such as Oluwo, Balogun, and Jagunna of Ilawo.
Responding, Chief Oluwole Dosunmu denied any wrongdoing, asserting the chiefs acted with community approval and maintained recognition from the Osile of Oke Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso.
