Tinubu Administration Delays Inauguration of Tertiary Institutions’ Governing Councils

Written by on May 27, 2024

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed the inauguration and retreat for the governing councils of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, originally scheduled for May 30th and 31st, 2024.

Folasade Boriowo, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education, disclosed this postponement in a statement released on Monday. The federal government had previously announced the formation of these governing councils and their planned inauguration dates.

The delay comes as a result of a presidential directive issued on May 23, calling for a comprehensive review of the council memberships. “We regret any inconveniences this may cause. Further updates will be communicated in due course,” stated the Ministry of Education.

President Tinubu ordered a thorough review of the governing boards for the nation’s tertiary institutions just five days after their initial release. The directive noted discrepancies in representation, highlighting that some states had multiple nominations while others had only one.

In response to the public’s concerns, President Tinubu’s administration emphasized the importance of reflecting the country’s Federal Character in these appointments. “The nominations did not reflect the Federal Character of the country,” said Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. “President Tinubu is committed to ensuring strict compliance with the principle of federal character as entrenched in the constitution.”

Onanuga further explained that the review will consider national representation to ensure every region is adequately represented.

The Ministry of Education had recently released the names of nominees for chairmen, pro-chancellors, and members of the boards and councils for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. This announcement, however, was met with criticism from various quarters, including the Bauchi zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The union suggested reinstating the previously dissolved members.
