President Bola Tinubu has announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will provide improved access to production and marketing centers for 30 million people. The President made this statement during the project’s flag-off ceremony in Lagos on Sunday, marking his first year in office.
Highlighting the benefits of the 700km highway, Tinubu stated, “During the period of construction, the road will provide direct employment for thousands and indirect employment for tens of thousands, creating economic opportunities for millions.” He emphasized that the highway would fast-track community development, enhance connectivity, and boost economic activities across the regions it traverses.
Initiated by the Federal Government in March, the Lagos-Calabar highway will span nine states with additional spurs connecting to northern states. The project has faced criticism due to the demolition of buildings and concerns over compensation for affected property owners.
Minister of Works David Umahi revealed that 750 houses along the highway’s path have been marked for demolition, with the government allocating N2.75 billion in compensation.
Responding to the criticism, President Tinubu appealed for public understanding and assured that the government would provide appropriate compensation. “We all make sacrifices to enable our country to grow,” he said, stressing the compassionate nature of his administration.
Tinubu described the highway as a symbol of hope, unity, and prosperity, highlighting its potential to connect communities, foster trade, boost tourism, and create new opportunities. Drawing a parallel with Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, he noted that similar infrastructure could significantly boost tourism revenues.
The President commended the Minister of Works and private investors for their roles in the project, noting that the EPC+F (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Plus Finance) model adopted by the ministry is commendable. He urged stakeholders to ensure the project’s safety, sustainability, and social responsibility, aiming for a lasting legacy.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is intended to link Lagos to Cross River, passing through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states. Minister Umahi added that the road would be constructed using concrete pavement and that a committee has been established to handle compensation for affected landowners.
In closing, Tinubu expressed his gratitude to all involved and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to seeing the project through, stating, “We are determined to build a nation of prosperity and embark on bold endeavours to ensure success for future generations.”
