26-Year-Old Anambra Carpenter Manages N200m Project Successfully

Written by on July 10, 2024

Nelson Okafor, a 26-year-old carpenter from Anambra and the CEO of Carpenterway, has shared his insights on the value of learning a craft, particularly carpentry, and the numerous opportunities it presents.

During a seminar for aspiring young entrepreneurs in Awka on Tuesday, Okafor emphasized the importance of appreciating the dignity of labor, especially in a time when fraudulent activities are rampant among youths.

He addressed the “Japa” syndrome and urged young Nigerians to broaden their perspectives beyond white-collar jobs as the only path to success. Okafor encouraged humility and the willingness to pursue any profession, regardless of its perceived unattractiveness.

Okafor advised youths to channel the same intelligence used in fraudulent activities towards acquiring and honing skills to earn an honest living. He stated, “There is dignity in labor. Instead of engaging in fraud, use that intelligence to learn and enhance your skills for a respectable livelihood.”

Reflecting on his journey, Okafor highlighted that any job, no matter how unattractive, can be lucrative with dedication and skill. He shared his experience of handling an interior job worth over N200 million, attributing his success to his dual expertise as a carpenter and an interior designer.

“My education and artisan skills give me an edge over regular interior designers who often only direct or supervise projects. When necessary, I step in to ensure the job is done correctly, which speeds up the process,” he explained.

Okafor credits his innovative approach and inspiration from industry veterans for his success. He also recruits young people, which fosters a smooth, fast, and innovative work environment.

When asked if he ever considered quitting, Okafor admitted that he faced doubts and discouragement in the early stages. However, he feels it’s too late to quit now, having built a strong foundation for his business. “We have established a structure that allows the company to run smoothly even when I take breaks,” he added.

Okafor’s story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in achieving success, regardless of the profession.
