Akpabio Promises Quality Healthcare for All Nigerians

Written by on July 10, 2024

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has pledged that the National Assembly will ensure every Nigerian has access to quality healthcare.

Speaking at a public hearing organized by the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary), Akpabio emphasized the need for specialized institutions like orthopaedic hospitals and eye treatment centers. He noted that Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure is a serious concern, lagging behind other developing nations in modern medical facilities and resources.

The hearing discussed bills including the “Federal Orthopaedic Hospital, Toro, Bauchi State (Amendment) Bill, 2024” and the “National Eye Centre Doma, Nasarawa State (Establishment) Bill, 2024.” Akpabio, represented by Senator Osita Ngwu, PDP, Enugu West, stressed the importance of these bills in ensuring that every Nigerian can access necessary healthcare.

“We must ensure that every Nigerian has access to the care they need, when they need it. By supporting these bills, we fulfill our constitutional mandate and show our dedication to the health and welfare of our people,” Akpabio said.

He highlighted that the proposed legislation would build a stronger, more resilient healthcare sector, capable of meeting the needs of Nigerians. The bills reflect the foresight and commitment of the Senate to the well-being of citizens.

Senator Shehu Buba, APC-Bauchi South, sponsor of the bill to establish the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital in Toro, Bauchi State, emphasized that the hospital would offer comprehensive orthopaedic care and reduce reliance on traditional bone setters. It would also bring affordable healthcare closer to people, reduce medical tourism, stimulate economic growth, and create job opportunities.
