A brutal incident of domestic violence has shocked the community of Berea, Johannesburg, South Africa, as 27-year-old Khanyisile Mndayi fights for her life in a coma after being stabbed over 20 times by her boyfriend in front of their children.
The horrific attack took place on Sunday at their residence, reportedly following Mndayi’s return home late from her shift. According to a Facebook post by Gillian Mogale, Mndayi was subjected to physical assault and then brutally stabbed by her boyfriend, identified as Bongani, also known as Luuk De Jong on Facebook.
Mogale’s post described the chilling events, stating, “Mndayi came home late from her shift at Tempo. Upon her arrival home at Metropolitan flat in Berea, she was insulted, beaten, and ultimately stabbed multiple times right in front of her kids by her boyfriend, BONGANI.” Mndayi is currently hospitalized and fighting for her life.
The gravity of the situation was further highlighted by a statement from the non-profit organization, Women For Change, which is dedicated to combating gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa. The statement revealed that Mndayi had sustained more than twenty stab wounds and was in a coma. It alleged that the boyfriend had fled the scene after locking Mndayi and their children indoors.
However, the perpetrator was later apprehended when he returned with the intention of inflicting further harm, according to the statement. “The boyfriend took his belongings, leaving the severely injured Khanysile and the children behind,” the statement said. “Neighbours alerted the police, and when the boyfriend came back to allegedly continue to stab Khanyisile, police were able to arrest him.”
The incident has reignited discussions about the prevalence of domestic violence and the urgent need for measures to address it. Meanwhile, prayers and calls for justice pour in for Mndayi and her children as she battles for her life.
In a related development, PUNCH Online reported in April on another tragic case of domestic violence involving a United Kingdom-based Nigerian man, Olubunmi Abodunde, who beat his wife, Taiwo, to death with their son’s skateboard. The couple, who had three children, had reportedly immigrated to the UK from Nigeria in 2022 and were embroiled in frequent disputes over alleged affairs and financial matters.
