Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently presiding over the 141st session of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting includes the attendance of several state governors and their deputies.

The NEC, established under section 153(1) and Paragraphs 18 & 19 of part I of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), consists of the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank, and other co-opted government officials. The council, chaired by the Vice President, meets monthly to provide advice to the President on economic affairs and to coordinate economic planning efforts across the federation.

During the 140th NEC meeting held on March 21, the council received reports from 16 state governors supporting the establishment of state police. They recommended constitutional amendments to facilitate the creation of state police forces.

Vice President Shettima’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, mentioned that NEC is awaiting reports from the remaining 20 states and expressed confidence that they would also support the initiative. The Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Asishana Okauru, in an exclusive interview with Sunday PUNCH, stated that the decisions of the remaining 20 state governors were expected to be submitted in the lead-up to Thursday’s meeting.
