UN Condemns Alarming Frequency of School Abductions in Nigeria: Urgent Action Needed

Written by on March 8, 2024

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has strongly denounced the recent abduction of students by bandits in Kaduna State, highlighting the alarming frequency of such incidents across Nigeria. UNICEF emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive action from all levels of government and society to address this escalating crisis.

Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, expressed profound sadness and concern over the abduction, stressing that schools should be safe havens for learning and growth, not targets of fear and violence. The abduction of over 280 pupils and teachers from Government Secondary School and LEA primary school in Kuriga, Kaduna State, underscores the gravity of the situation.

Munduate urged immediate measures to ensure the safe return of the abducted children and staff, emphasizing the importance of securing schools across Nigeria. UNICEF calls on authorities to implement robust strategies to safeguard educational institutions and protect the right to education against any form of violence or intimidation.

The UN Children’s Agency is collaborating with local officials to assist affected families, including psychological support services. UNICEF remains committed to working with government entities, communities, and partners to address the root causes of violence against children and ensure the safety of educational environments.

In the face of escalating insecurity, UNICEF reaffirms its dedication to promoting peace and protecting children from the looming threats of violence. Every child deserves to learn and grow in a peaceful environment, free from the shadows of insecurity. Concerted efforts must be made to restore safety and security for children across Nigeria.
