UK Proposes Ban on Gender Identity Education for Children Under Nine

Written by on May 16, 2024

In England, schools are facing new government proposals set to prohibit the teaching of sex education and gender identity to children under the age of nine. The move comes in response to concerns raised about the appropriateness of such content for primary school children, according to a statement from the education ministry.

Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his concerns, stating, “Parents rightly trust that when they send their children to school, they are kept safe and will not be exposed to disturbing content that is inappropriate for their age. That’s why I was horrified to hear reports of this happening in our classrooms last year.”

The proposed ban extends beyond sex education to include the exclusion of teaching the “contested theory of gender identity” to young children, the ministry confirmed.

This initiative follows a significant review that emphasized “extreme caution” regarding prescribing hormone treatments for youth dealing with gender identity issues. Alongside the ban, the new proposals aim to incorporate additional education on suicide prevention and the dangers of consuming online content promoting self-harm.

These proposals are slated for a nine-week consultation period and will become statutory once finalized.
