A devastating road traffic accident on Sunday afternoon along the Lokoja-Obajana Road in Kogi State resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals, including five children, and left eight others injured.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the incident occurred around 4 p.m. in the Gadabiu area of Lokoja Local Government Area and involved a head-on collision between a Toyota Hummer bus and an articulated truck.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that the crash was caused by speeding and improper overtaking. The ill-fated bus, which was en route to Abuja, reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided directly with an oncoming truck.

The impact of the collision led to a fire outbreak, which resulted in the fatal burns of many passengers before emergency responders could intervene. Of the 27 people reportedly involved in the accident, only eight survived, sustaining various injuries including fractures, dislocations, cuts, and burns.

Emergency response teams, including officers of the FRSC and the Nigeria Police, promptly evacuated the injured victims to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for treatment.

The state’s FRSC Sector Commander has since reiterated the dangers of reckless driving, urging motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and overtaking rules to prevent further loss of lives on Nigerian highways.

This tragic event adds to the growing concern over safety on major roads across the country, particularly involving commercial transport vehicles.
