A man lost his life after being struck by a moving train in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Monday, marking a shocking recurrence of train-related fatalities just ten days after a similar incident in the Oshodi area.
Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), reported that the fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Monday. The agency activated its response team at 8:28 a.m. after receiving distress calls, arriving at the scene by 9:02 a.m. to discover the body of an adult male on the train tracks.
“Further investigations revealed that the adult male was reportedly hit by a moving train in the early hours of the morning,” Oke-Osayintolu explained. The response team promptly recovered the body and handed it over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for necessary procedures, including its transfer to the morgue.
In a related matter, the Lagos State Task Force is committed to addressing the issue of traders operating along the train tracks. Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, the task force spokesperson, expressed concern about the persistent disregard for safety regulations by these traders despite ongoing efforts to deter them, Punch Metro reports.
“Last week, we were at Mile 2 and we dislodged some of the traders who were trading on the track. The problem is that these traders have remained defiant despite repeated warnings and arrests,” Gbadeyan stated. “We will intensify our efforts in arresting the defiant ones who have refused to heed warnings. The train tracks are not places to ply your trade.”
