Tinubu Requests Reps’ Approval for N24bn Airport Refund to Nasarawa and Kebbi States

President Bola Tinubu has called on the House of Representatives to grant concurrent approval to the Federal Government for the refund of N24 billion to Nasarawa and Kebbi states. This reimbursement is for the takeover of airports constructed by the states.
The request was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, and presented during Thursday’s plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
According to the letter, Kebbi State had expended funds on the construction of the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Birnin Kebbi, while Nasarawa State invested in the Lafia Cargo Airport.
Tinubu’s letter stated, “The House of Representatives is invited to note that at the Executive Council meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on the 23rd of May 2023, it was approved as follows:
– A promissory note of N9,000,542,651,786.11 be issued to the Nasarawa State Government as a refund for the takeover of the newly constructed Nasarawa Airport.
– A promissory note of N15,137,336,95.88 only be issued to the Kebbi State Government as a refund for the takeover of the Birnin Kebbi International Airport.”
The letter highlighted that aviation, including airports, falls under the exclusive legislative list of the constitution, thus making the ownership, regulation, and control of airports the responsibility of the Federal Government.
Tinubu urged the House to grant concurrent approval for the establishment of the promissory notes program for both states.
