President Bola Tinubu convened a crucial meeting with the leadership of the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja on Monday. The meeting, which was orchestrated against a backdrop of brewing disagreements within the Edo APC, served the purpose of officially presenting the party’s flag to its gubernatorial candidate for the September 2024 elections, Monday Okpebholo, along with his running mate, Dennis Idahosa.
The delegation, spearheaded by APC Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, was received at the Villa for discussions aimed at quelling the internal strife and solidifying party unity ahead of the upcoming elections.
Although the specifics of the closed-door deliberations remain undisclosed, it has come to light that Idahosa was urged to retract his legal challenge against Okpebholo’s candidacy. The primary election, which saw Okpebholo emerge as the candidate, was embroiled in controversy from the outset.
Initially, Idahosa was declared the party’s nominee by the Governor Hope Uzodimma-led committee, triggering a complex series of events. The initial voting round witnessed Okpebholo, Idahosa, and Dekeri vying for the party’s gubernatorial ticket. However, due to numerous irregularities, the party’s National Working Committee deemed the exercise inconclusive.
Ultimately, in the February 23 re-run, Okpebholo clinched victory with 12,433 votes, securing his position as the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the forthcoming elections.
Notable personalities in attendance at the meeting included Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, and former Edo South Senate representative, Matthew Urhoghide, among others.
