Written by on March 12, 2024

In a significant development aimed at resolving the persistent issue of farmer-herder clashes in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has put forth a groundbreaking proposal during his recent visit to Minna. Speaking at the inauguration of the Minna airport terminal, Tinubu outlined a comprehensive plan that could potentially bring about resolution within a remarkably short timeframe.

Tinubu emphasized the urgency of reorienting herders and providing essential infrastructure for cattle rearing to mitigate conflicts. He stressed, “When we re-orient the herders and make provision for cattle rearing, the problems will be solved.” This proposal hinges on state governors’ cooperation in providing suitable land for the initiative.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of agriculture in fostering economic growth, Tinubu commended the agricultural revolution agenda spearheaded by Niger State Governor, Umar Bago. He underscored the importance of states leveraging their comparative advantages to generate income and employment opportunities through agricultural initiatives.

In addition to addressing the farmer-herder conflicts, Tinubu urged governors to prioritize the timely implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage to alleviate financial burdens on workers and promote industrial harmony. He emphasized the feasibility of this wage increase, urging states to utilize available resources for its implementation.

Highlighting collaborative efforts, Governor Bago mentioned existing partnerships with states such as Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Lagos for agricultural development. Furthermore, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, disclosed agreements with international partners to finance mechanization programs across Nigeria, marking a significant stride towards agricultural modernization.

Tinubu’s proposals underscore the pressing need to address farmer-herder conflicts and harness Nigeria’s agricultural potential for economic prosperity. Through concerted efforts between the federal and state governments, alongside strategic partnerships, Nigeria can pave the way for a more prosperous and food-secure future.
