Written by on February 14, 2024

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed five new directors to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) board, as revealed in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read at plenary on Tuesday.

The letter, seeking screening and confirmation of the appointees, underscores Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring effective governance and strategic leadership within the CBN. The nominees—Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Muritala Sagaley, Urom Eke, and Olayinka Aliyu—are expected to bring their expertise and experience to bear on the board’s operations.

In compliance with the Central Bank of Nigeria Establishment Act, 2007, Tinubu expressed his pleasure in presenting the nominees for Senate confirmation. He emphasized the importance of expeditious consideration by the Senate, reflecting the urgency and significance of the appointments.

Following the referral of the request to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, further legislative action is expected, with a report slated to be presented back to plenary within four weeks.

Additionally, in a separate letter, Tinubu sought the Senate’s confirmation for the appointment of Mr. Hamidu Rahim as Commissioner for the National Population Commission (NPC) representing Osun State. This request, made in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended), underscores Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening critical institutions and ensuring effective representation at all levels of government.

The Senate, under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, has referred the request to the Senate Committee on National Population and National Identity for further legislative scrutiny, with a mandate to report back to plenary within one week.
