Tinubu Appoints Dr. Temitope Ilori as First Female Director-General of NACA

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Dr. Temitope Ilori as the new Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), marking a significant milestone in the agency’s leadership.

Dr. Ilori, who officially took on her role on February 22, 2024, for an initial term of four years, is notably the daughter of the former Governor of Osun State and the first interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Adebisi Akande.

The announcement, made by Toyin Aderibigbe, the Head of Public Relations and Protocol of NACA, underscores Dr. Ilori’s credentials and achievements in the medical field. Before her appointment, she served as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine at the University of Ibadan and as a Consultant Family Physician at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.

Dr. Ilori is a distinguished scholar, having obtained her MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan and completed her residency training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. She has also earned recognition as the best graduating Fellow of the Faculty of Family Medicine, West African College of Physicians, winning the prestigious A.O. Senbanjo Prize.

Furthermore, Dr. Ilori holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) and a Master of Science (MSc.) Degrees in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD at the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, sponsored by the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa.

With extensive experience in policy formulation and strategic development, Dr. Ilori previously served as Commissioner for Health in Osun State, Nigeria, from 2011 to 2014. She also chaired the Osun State Agency on Control of HIV/AIDS (O-SACA) and the Osun State Technical Working Group on Immunization, showcasing her commitment to public health initiatives.

Dr. Ilori’s appointment marks a significant step forward for NACA, as she brings her expertise in Primary Care, Immunization, Public Health Nutrition, Non-Communicable Diseases, and Women’s and Child’s Health to the forefront. Her track record as a prolific researcher, with over 30 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, further strengthens her capacity to lead NACA effectively.

In response to her appointment, Dr. Ilori expressed her dedication to advancing the agency’s mission, stating, “I am honoured to lead NACA and will work tirelessly to combat HIV/AIDS and enhance public health outcomes across Nigeria.”
