SSANU and NASU Begin Nationwide Strike Over Withheld Salaries, FG Unaware

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have commenced a nationwide strike today (Monday) in protest of their four months’ withheld salaries.
Despite the impending strike, the Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, claimed ignorance of SSANU/NASU’s planned action, stating that the matter was receiving attention at the highest level of government.
The Federal Government, citing the no-work, no-pay policy, had withheld the salaries of university workers following a protracted strike in 2021. Although the government released four months’ withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in February, SSANU and NASU were excluded from the disbursement.
SSANU’s National President, Muhammed Ibrahim, highlighted the unions’ repeated demands for equitable treatment and the release of their withheld salaries. Despite letters and ultimatums issued to the government, there has been no positive response, leading to the decision to commence the warning strike.
Abdussobur Salaam, SSANU National Vice-President, lamented the lack of engagement from the government, emphasizing the union’s willingness to negotiate but receiving no offers or promises regarding the withheld salaries.
The strike action aims to compel the Federal Government to address the grievances of SSANU and NASU members regarding the withheld salaries, signalling their determination to pursue their demands until resolved satisfactorily.
