The UEFA Champions League served up some thrilling results on Tuesday, with major shocks and statement wins across Europe.
Sporting’s Stunning Victory Over Manchester City
Sporting Lisbon caused one of the biggest surprises of the group stage, with a 4-1 victory over Manchester City. Viktor Gyokeres was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick. Despite an early lead from City’s Phil Foden, Sporting responded with Gyokeres’ equalizer just before halftime.
The Portuguese side then took control in the second half, with Maximiliano Araujo scoring early in the second half and Gyokeres converting two penalties, the second of which came after Erling Haaland missed from the spot for City. The win handed City their heaviest loss in European competition since April 2018.
Sporting’s coach Ruben Amorim, who is set to leave for Manchester United, was emotional after the game. “It was written that it had to be like that,” he said, celebrating a memorable victory.
Liverpool’s Dominant Performance
Liverpool continued their perfect run with a commanding 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Luis Diaz scored a brilliant hat-trick, with Cody Gakpo also getting on the scoresheet. Diaz’s goals came in the second half, completing a dominant display by the Reds. After four matches, Liverpool remain the only team with a perfect record, sitting at the top of their group with 12 points.
Real Madrid Slump Against AC Milan
Real Madrid’s struggles in the Champions League continued as they suffered a 3-1 home loss to AC Milan. Milan took the lead through Malick Thiaw, and although Vinicius Junior equalized from the penalty spot for Madrid, they fell behind again before halftime to an Alvaro Morata goal.
Milan sealed the win in the 73rd minute with Tijjani Reijnders’ strike. The defeat marked Madrid’s second loss in four games, raising questions over their form in Europe.
