Russia Denies Reports of Putin-Trump Call on Ukraine Conflict

On Monday, Russia refuted reports of a phone call between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump concerning the conflict in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov labeled the claim as “false,” countering an article published by The Washington Post, which alleged that Trump advised Putin not to escalate the situation during a Thursday conversation.
While Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, declined to comment on private discussions, a Ukrainian official confirmed that Kyiv was not aware of any such conversation.
Trump has previously expressed his intent to quickly negotiate an end to the war and indicated willingness for direct talks with Putin. However, specifics on his proposed peace deal remain unclear.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with Trump over the weekend, emphasizing the goal of restoring peace in Europe. Peskov noted, however, that no dialogues were planned between Putin and Scholz and questioned whether European perspectives had shifted after Trump’s electoral success.
Despite expressing openness to negotiations, Moscow continued its military operations, seeking to meet strategic objectives.
Ukraine and Western allies remain concerned about potential compromises that could favor Russia and undermine Ukrainian sovereignty. Russian forces have continued offensives, including airstrikes in the eastern Donetsk region, which Moscow maintains are essential until their goals are fulfilled.
