Rivers PDP Grassroots Coordinators Switch Allegiance from Wike to Fubara

Written by on March 12, 2024

In a significant political move, coordinators of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a vital arm of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, have announced their departure from the initiative originally formed by ex-governor Nyesom Wike. Instead, they have pledged support to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Wike’s successor and estranged political protégé.

The decision was revealed by GDI coordinators from 12 local government areas during a courtesy visit to Governor Fubara. Collins Onunwo, formerly the coordinator for Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, led the delegation.

Onunwo emphasized the role GDI played in Wike’s election but stated that the coordinators have opted to align with Fubara for the state’s overall benefit. This move underscores the ongoing tension between Wike and Fubara, which escalated last year when members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike attempted to impeach Fubara.

Speaking after the meeting with Fubara, Onunwo highlighted the primary mission of GDI to safeguard the interests of Rivers State and its people. He emphasized the coordinators’ commitment to protecting the mandate that brought Fubara into power through a credible election.

Former Public Relations Officer of GDI, Christian Abu, echoed the sentiment, describing the group as instrumental in previous election victories in the state. He emphasized the need to align with Fubara moving forward.

The meeting also saw the presence of notable figures such as Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo, State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, and Prince Solomon Eke, Special Adviser to the Governor on Power.
