President Tinubu Urges Stringent Measures Against Kidnappers, Vows to Eliminate Them

Written by on March 27, 2024

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has strongly denounced the rising menace of kidnapping across the nation, calling for the perpetrators to be classified and treated as terrorists.

Speaking at a Ramadan dinner with federal judiciary members led by Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, President Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating banditry. He labelled kidnappers as “cowards” who prey on vulnerable targets but lack the courage to face Nigeria’s armed forces.

Tinubu stated, “We must regard kidnappers on par with terrorists to eradicate this menace. Their cowardly actions, especially targeting schools and children, must be decisively addressed.”

Addressing the judiciary’s welfare concerns, the president acknowledged the challenges faced by judicial officers, including outdated equipment and limited post-retirement career prospects. He pledged ongoing reforms to enhance their working conditions and compensation.

Expressing gratitude to the judiciary for their unwavering service, Tinubu emphasized the collaborative efforts needed to bring Nigeria closer to a brighter future.

In response, CJN Justice Ariwoola lauded President Tinubu’s dedication to judicial reforms and expressed optimism for the administration’s promising initiatives.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, commended the president for introducing the “Judicial Office Holders, Salaries and Allowances, etc, Bill 2024” to the National Assembly. Highlighting the long-standing salary stagnation for judges since 2007, Fagbemi praised Tinubu’s decisive actions in addressing the issue.

”It takes a man with a great heart, determination, and consideration to do what the president did. More than 300.3 per cent increase has been given to the judges. The president has done his own part, never mind that the bill is still with the National Assembly. In my short stay as the Attorney-General, I have come to observe that anything that concerns the judiciary, you are very much interested in it, and I thank you for your abiding interest in the judiciary,” Fagbemi further said.
