Written by on November 4, 2024

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the immediate release of all minors detained during the August #EndBadGovernance protests. This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an emergency briefing at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

Idris stated, “The President has ordered the immediate release of all minors who have been arrested by the Nigeria Police, regardless of their ongoing legal processes. He has directed that they be released without delay.”

In addition, the President has tasked the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction with ensuring the welfare of these minors and facilitating their reunion with parents or guardians across the country. An administrative committee led by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs will be established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the minors’ arrest, detention, and treatment.

Furthermore, the President has mandated an investigation into the actions of law enforcement officials involved in the arrests, promising disciplinary action for any infractions discovered.

This directive comes amid public outcry over the arraignment of at least 76 individuals, including 30 minors aged between 14 and 17, on serious felony charges such as treason and public disturbance.
