Police Investigate Ogun Woman for Abandoning Baby Outside Clinic

Written by on November 25, 2024

The Ogun State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the abandonment of a newborn infant at Blessed Clinic in Oru Ijebu, located in the Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The baby, estimated to be no older than 40 days, was discovered at around 6:45 a.m. on Friday. The clinic’s owner found the child outside and immediately brought the baby inside for urgent medical care, before reporting the incident to the Oru Police Division.

Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the investigation and noted that authorities are working to identify the individual responsible for the abandonment. “The medical doctor in charge of the hospital alerted our division about the child. We have launched an investigation into the matter, and the baby is currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” Odutola said.

Child abandonment remains a serious issue in Ogun State and other parts of Nigeria. In 2022, a baby girl was abandoned on Tajudeen Bello Street, Giwa Oke-Aro Road. Unable to speak or walk, the child was rejected by orphanages and is now in police custody at the Agbado Division.

In January 2024, a similar case occurred when a 30-year-old mother, Olubunmi Ajayi, was arrested for attempting to drown her five-month-old baby, Imole Anifowose, in a river near Remo Secondary School in Sagamu. The child was rescued by passerby Olusola Sonaya, who witnessed the incident and intervened.

As the investigation into the Oru Ijebu case continues, police are urging anyone with information about the mother’s identity to come forward. Meanwhile, the abandoned infant remains under medical care at Blessed Clinic, where efforts to ensure their well-being are ongoing.
