Obasanjo Spearheads Nigeria-Angola Trade Mission, Explores Economic Opportunities

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, led a delegation of Nigerian investors to Angola on a trade mission aimed at fostering economic cooperation and exploring investment opportunities. The visit, which took place over the weekend, saw discussions centred around key sectors such as oil refineries, hydropower, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

During a closed-door meeting with Angolan President Joao Lourenco, Obasanjo highlighted the potential for joint investments in various sectors. This meeting also included discussions with Armando Manuel, Chairman of the Sovereign Wealth Fund, to explore avenues for collaboration between the two nations.

Obasanjo’s engagements extended to meetings with the former Prime Minister of Angola, Lopo Nascimento, where investment opportunities and historical ties between the two countries were discussed. Notably, Nigeria’s aid to Angola as a frontline state in 1976 was revisited, showcasing the longstanding relationship between the nations.

The President of the Angola Nigeria Business Council, Mrs. Fifi Ejindu, emphasized the role of the Business Council in driving economic cooperation between the private sectors of both countries. She highlighted the importance of unity in achieving significant milestones in bilateral relations.

Furthermore, discussions with Vice President Esparanca da Costa focused on enhancing economic cooperation and bilateral relations. The comprehensive exchange of strategies aimed to foster a dynamic and productive partnership between Angola and Nigeria.

Leke Adebiyi, a Special Envoy to Obasanjo, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the visit, noting the keen interest expressed by all parties in pursuing joint business ventures. He emphasized the alignment of this effort with the vision of fostering stronger economic ties and creating viable investment opportunities.

The delegation, which included key figures such as Mrs Ejindu and Angola’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Jose Zau, signals a promising development in efforts to bolster economic cooperation and trade relations between Nigeria and Angola. As both nations continue to explore new avenues for collaboration, a brighter and more prosperous future awaits citizens of both countries.
