The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that the number of Nigerians with National Identification Numbers (NIN) has risen to 110 million. This represents a 2.39 percent increase from the 107.34 million recorded in May 2024.
NIMC’s Director General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, revealed the updated figures during the sixth edition of the National Day of Identity, themed “Digital Public Infrastructure: Enabling Access to Services,” held in Abuja. She attributed this growth to the strategic initiatives of the current NIMC leadership, emphasizing the crucial role of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in Nigeria’s economic development.
Coker-Odusote said, “The role of DPI has become indispensable to Nigeria’s economic development, as it offers a framework that connects citizens to essential services such as social welfare, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion. At the forefront of this transformation is NIMC, responsible for the National Identification Number, which has enrolled over 110 million Nigerians.”
She also highlighted the importance of DPI in streamlining digital payments, identity processes, and financial services, citing the success of the Student Loan Initiative, which has supported 332,715 students across 257 institutions, with over 18,000 students receiving payments.
Collaboration with various government agencies and private entities, including harmonizing NIN with phone numbers and bank verification numbers, has also played a significant role in promoting the country’s digital infrastructure, she added.
