Nigeria’s under-18 men’s handball team claimed the IHF Trophy Africa Men Continental Phase championship with an emphatic 38-26 victory over Guinea in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Wednesday.
The match, highlighted by the presence of Ethiopian government officials and Nigeria’s Embassy Minister Boco Effiom Mbo, saw Coach Emeka Nnamani’s team showcase determination from the outset. Despite some early errors, they secured a 21-14 lead by halftime.
In the second half, the Nigerians played with flair and precision. Christian Foloki, who rebounded from an injury in the semi-final against Cameroon, and star scorer Azeez Sulaimon propelled the team’s offensive and defensive efforts. Sulaimon’s outstanding performance earned him the Most Valuable Player award of the match.
Coach Nnamani praised the team’s preparation and credited the Handball Federation of Nigeria, led by Samuel Ocheho, for their comprehensive support from the Zone 3 Phase in Ghana to the continental competition.
This victory not only reaffirms Nigeria’s position as continental champions but also marks their successful title defense after winning in Congo Brazzaville two years earlier.
