In the midst of uncertainty regarding qualification for the 2025 U-17 AFCON, Nigeria and hosts Ghana are set to face off in the third-place playoff of the ongoing WAFU B U-17 Championship at the University of Ghana Stadium on Tuesday (today), according to The PUNCH.
Both Nigeria and Ghana suffered defeats in the semi-finals, failing to secure spots in the 2025 tournament. Ghana was beaten 2-1 by Burkina Faso, while Ivory Coast edged out Nigeria with a 1-0 victory. Despite these setbacks, there remains hope for one or more spots for the U-17 AFCON, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to clarify the number of teams that will qualify from the zone for the continental showpiece.
The lack of clarity regarding qualification has left teams and fans in suspense, with the West African Football Union (WAFU) also unable to provide definitive information on the number of teams advancing to the 2025 Africa U-17 AFCON from WAFU B.
In response to this uncertainty, Mohammed Sanusi, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, has urged the Golden Eaglets to approach the third-place playoff against the hosts with determination.
Sanusi emphasized the importance of not leaving anything to chance against the Black Starlets, highlighting the challenges posed by playing against the home side with the support of the local fans.
Despite the formidable opposition, Sanusi expressed confidence in the abilities of the Nigerian team, urging them to give their all to secure victory and finish in third place.
The third-place match is scheduled to kick off at 3pm Ghanaian time (4pm Nigerian time) at the University of Ghana Stadium. It precedes the final match between Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, which is set to commence at 6pm Ghanaian time (7pm Nigerian time).
