MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has unveiled a pilot program for its eco-friendly SIM cards, crafted from biodegradable paper, as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability. This initiative aligns with the company’s Project Zero goals, which target the reduction of emissions and the achievement of net-zero emissions by 2040.
In a statement released over the weekend, MTN emphasized that these biodegradable SIM cards are more environmentally friendly, supporting a lifecycle management approach that promotes circularity and minimizes waste. The gradual phase-out of plastic-based SIM cards is a significant step toward curbing plastic pollution, underscoring MTN’s commitment to incorporating sustainable practices into its operations.
“This initiative, driven through a local supplier, reflects MTN’s commitment to empowering local businesses and boosting economic growth through sustainable partnerships,” the statement highlighted.
During the launch at MTN’s Lagos office, Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, praised the benefits of the new SIM cards, explaining: “Comparing the benefits of the 100% biodegradable paper-based SIM cards to the Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic-based material, these eco-friendly SIMs can biodegrade naturally and are recyclable, thus reducing waste pollution. It also lowers carbon emissions footprint during production and disposal.”
He further noted that the initiative eliminates the environmental challenges posed by plastic SIM cards, including waste management issues such as landfill and incineration, and their limited recycling options.
The company’s General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value, Adekemi Adisa, also emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Our people and the environment where they live drives the innovative measures we take. The launch of our recyclable SIM cards embodies our commitment to sustainability, encouraging our customers to make eco-friendly choices, reducing waste and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for Nigerians.”
