During a courtesy visit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider reopening land borders to address the prevailing food crisis in the country. The governor emphasized that this move would not only mitigate food scarcity but also help alleviate economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
Highlighting the impact of the harsh economic conditions, Governor Kabir-Yusuf underscored the importance of reopening borders to stabilize food prices and curb inflation. He commended the president’s intervention in the national food initiative, expressing optimism that it would alleviate the effects of food scarcity, particularly if implemented effectively.
Governor Kabir-Yusuf emphasized that reopening borders and facilitating free importation of commodities would contribute significantly to ensuring food availability and affordability for the population. He urged the Federal Government to prioritize this intervention to address the pressing challenges of food insecurity and economic hardship.
In response to the governor’s plea, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized the need for effective collaboration between the Customs Service and the Kano community. He assured of the Customs’ commitment to implementing policies aimed at addressing food insecurity and fostering engagement with stakeholders.
While consultations on border reopening are ongoing, Mr Adeniyi reiterated that only President Bola Tinubu has the prerogative to make the final decision on this matter. He affirmed the Customs’ dedication to addressing economic challenges and ensuring food security across the country.
As discussions continue, stakeholders are hopeful that reopening land borders will offer a sustainable solution to the food crisis and contribute to economic stability and prosperity.
