Julius Berger Sanctioned Following Fatal Crane Incident in Lagos
Written by Jerry Alomatu on November 7, 2024
The Lagos State Safety Commission has sanctioned Julius Berger Nigeria Plc over the tragic death of engineer Olalekan Oloruntoba, who died while operating a crane at an Ijora Yard facility on September 23, 2024.
Initial reports suggested Oloruntoba’s death was caused by a crane collapse, but the commission’s investigation revealed that the fatality occurred when the contents of a 40-foot freight container shifted during unloading, toppling from a forklift and striking the engineer.
The commission’s CEO, Mr. Lanre Mojola, confirmed that Julius Berger has been instructed to comply with regulatory requirements and implement changes to prevent such incidents. The company is required to review its risk assessment procedures, update job hazard analysis, and conduct additional training for staff involved in loading and offloading activities.
Although specific details of the sanctions remain undisclosed, the commission emphasized the importance of reinforcing safety protocols.
Oloruntoba, a graduate of civil engineering, had worked with Julius Berger both during his university studies and after completing his National Youth Service Corps. His colleagues mourned him as a passionate professional.
This incident follows a similar workplace death in August, when a contract worker died under unsafe conditions
