Joao Pereira Named New Head Coach of Sporting Lisbon Following Ruben Amorim’s Departure to Manchester United

Joao Pereira has been appointed as the new head coach of Sporting Lisbon, taking over from Ruben Amorim, who is set to join Manchester United.

The Portuguese champions made the announcement on Monday that the 40-year-old Pereira will step up from his current position as the reserve-team boss following Amorim’s departure to Old Trafford.

Pereira, a former Portugal right-back who had three playing stints at Sporting, will lead the team as they continue their strong start to the season.

In Amorim’s final match in charge on Sunday, Sporting mounted an incredible comeback from two goals down to win 4-2 at Braga, keeping their perfect record in the Primeira Liga intact.

Sporting’s decision to promote Pereira comes after a highly successful tenure by Amorim, who led the team to two consecutive league titles, including their first in 19 years in 2021.

Amorim also steered the team to an impressive Champions League run, where they currently sit second in the group after a stunning 4-1 win over Manchester City in his last home game as coach.

Pereira will hold his first press conference as head coach later on Monday, according to Sporting’s social media.
