Israel Condemns Turkey’s UN Call for Arms Embargo as ‘Malice’ Amid Gaza Conflict

Written by on November 5, 2024

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has condemned Turkey after it led a coalition of 52 countries in calling for a halt in arms deliveries to Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The letter, submitted by Turkey to the UN, was endorsed by nations from the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, who described the civilian toll in Gaza as “unconscionable and intolerable.”

Danon criticized the move, accusing Turkey of supporting what he referred to as an “Axis of Evil,” and claimed the UN was influenced by countries with “sinister” intentions rather than those upholding justice and morality.

The Turkish-led letter argued that Israel’s actions in Gaza necessitate international intervention to stop arms transfers to prevent further harm to civilians. The letter also urged the UN Security Council to enforce resolutions related to the conflict, although the Council’s influence has been limited by the veto power held by the United States, a key Israeli ally.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s spokesperson indicated that the UN had not yet reviewed the letter.
