The House of Representatives has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to conduct further public enlightenment on the Cyber Crimes Act and the implementation of the 0.05 per cent levy. This comes amidst misconceptions that the levy is to be charged to individuals.
The resolution was made following a motion brought by the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, during Tuesday’s plenary, titled “Urgent need to correct the wrong perception of the House Of Representatives’ position on implementation of the Cybercrimes Act.”
Chinda clarified that the Cybercrimes Act imposes a levy of 0.05 per cent on certain establishments operating in the cyberspace, such as telecommunications companies, banks, insurance companies, and the Nigerian Stock Exchange. He emphasized that the levy is not applicable to ordinary Nigerians.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu affirmed the House’s commitment to the Cybersecurity Act and stressed the importance of protecting both physical and cyber spaces.
The House unanimously adopted the motion and assigned its Committees on National Security and Intelligence, Digital and Information Technology, Justice, Digital Economy, and Electronic Banking to oversee the implementation of the resolution.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian First Project, a civil society organization, commended the Federal Government for introducing the 0.05 per cent cybersecurity levy. At an event in Abuja, the organization urged Nigerians to support the government’s efforts to combat cybercrime and terrorism, highlighting the negative impact of cybercrime on Nigeria’s economy and global reputation.
In a joint statement, the organization emphasized the need for objective examination of the cybersecurity levy and its potential benefits to the country, urging Nigerians to reject misleading narratives surrounding the levy.
