Written by on June 19, 2024

Gunmen suspected to be local militias launched a deadly attack on the Gugur community in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the death of six individuals. Sources revealed that the gunmen, riding motorcycles, struck the community between 9 pm and 10 pm on Tuesday.

Confirming the incident, Jonathan Agbidye, the lawmaker representing the constituency in the state House of Assembly, disclosed that the attack was likely a revenge mission. He explained that the community had previously apprehended and executed two individuals believed to be affiliated with the hoodlums.

Local government chairman Shaku Justine corroborated the report, stating that the militias carried out the assault during the specified timeframe, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives. He further mentioned that he and the lawmaker visited the community for an on-the-spot assessment and reassured residents that normalcy is gradually returning.

However, Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the state police command, stated that the command had not yet received an official report on the incident.

The attack on the Gugur community underscores the persistent security challenges faced by residents in various parts of Benue State.
