FG Threatens License Revocation for DisCos Amid Poor Power Supply
Written by Deborah Oyinloye on March 7, 2024
In a significant development, the Federal Government has issued a stern warning to power Distribution Companies (DisCos) over persistent poor power supply across Nigeria, threatening to revoke their licenses.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, expressed concern over the inadequate electricity distribution despite increased generation by generation companies. He disclosed that CEOs of key DisCos and the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria have been summoned to a crucial meeting to address the ongoing challenges.
Adelabu emphasized the government’s commitment to holding DisCos accountable for their performance, stating that willful non-performance would not be tolerated, with severe consequences including license revocation.
The Minister highlighted the impact of vandalism on power infrastructure, exacerbating the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan. He instructed the Transmission Company of Nigeria to prioritize repair works to improve supply in affected areas.
Adelabu also reassured Nigerians of plans to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, aiming to alleviate financial strain and boost generation levels nationwide. He urged electricity consumers to remain patient as the government works tirelessly to address the issues and provide better service to all Nigerians.
