Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has inaugurated a seven-member Disciplinary Tribunal for Registered Builders of Nigeria, tasked with enforcing professional standards and public safety within the construction sector.

Salis Haiba, Director of Information and Public Relations, disclosed in a recent statement that the tribunal will assess cases of infractions referred by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria.

In his address, the minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with professional bodies and regulatory agencies to elevate Nigeria’s building standards to meet global benchmarks. “The tribunal is a part of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria, empowered with the duty of upholding the standards of the building profession, as well as guarding public safety,” he stated, noting that the tribunal’s establishment is facilitated under sections 16 (1) and (2) of the Builders Registration Act, Cap B13, LFN 2004.

Dangiwa highlighted the essential role of builders in constructing safe and reliable structures that protect lives, emphasizing the critical need to adhere to regulatory standards to prevent tragic incidents. “I have always believed that establishing structures, systems, and procedures that enforce adherence to professional standards and ethics is crucial,” he remarked, warning that any compromise on safety standards could lead to severe consequences. Reflecting on recent incidents, he expressed his concern over the “recurring pattern of building collapses across the country,” citing the recent tragedy in Abuja’s Lugbe area.

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the minister warned, “negligence, misconduct, or compromise on safety standards will not be tolerated in the building industry.” He praised the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria for its collaboration in nominating qualified tribunal members and urged the tribunal to manage disciplinary cases with “integrity, fairness, and transparency.”

“Your decisions will have far-reaching effects, and I trust you to carry out your responsibilities with the diligence and professionalism that this mandate requires,” Dangiwa advised the tribunal members.

In response, tribunal chairman Samson Opaluwah assured the minister that the tribunal’s inauguration “signified a bold statement by the Federal Government.” He further pledged the tribunal’s commitment to disciplining builders who fail to meet professional standards and promoting professional integrity across Nigeria’s construction sector.
