The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed the temporary closure of the renowned International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja for a comprehensive renovation. The decision comes after the minister expressed dismay over the facility’s deteriorating condition due to lack of maintenance.
During an extensive inspection of the sprawling complex on Monday, April 8, 2024, Minister Wike was visibly displeased with the state of disrepair of the ICC. He criticized the previous maintenance contract awarded to an allegedly incompetent firm and expressed concerns about the embarrassing situations the nation has faced during international events due to power outages, poor cooling systems, and the overall deplorable state of the venue.
Minister Wike commented, “It is very unfortunate; so many leaders mean well, but those of us who have the opportunity to be among those that will benefit at the end of the day set back the whole essence of good leadership. I told you we came here for the ECOWAS inauguration last week with Mr. President. No right-thinking human being would be pleased with the state of this facility.”
He further added, “We can’t endure this embarrassment anymore. We are sorry to announce that all bookings for the ICC will be cancelled as we commence immediate rehabilitation to maintain our international standards. We believe that in the next 7-8 months, with Julius Berger’s expertise and the support of FCTA and Abuja Investment Company, we will be able to transform this facility into something that people will appreciate.”
After the renovation, Minister Wike stated that the facility would be returned to the Abuja Investment Company Limited. He emphasized that the rehabilitation project will be carried out efficiently with the involvement of Julius Berger, the original contractor responsible for building the ICC.
