The body of 65-year-old farmer Mr. Akanbi Sunlola was discovered in a decomposed state on his farm in Gbokoyi village, Ilero, Kajola Local Government Area of Oyo State, four days after he was reported missing on November 28. The discovery was made by a group of hunters who had been tasked by the community to search for him. Sunlola’s body was found wrapped in rope, which authorities believe was used to drag him to his death.
Sunlola’s tragic end followed several confrontations with Fulani herdsmen, whom he had accused of grazing cattle on his maize farm.
Speaking about the incident, Sunlola’s elder brother, Mr. Akanbi Taiwo, appealed to the Ilero community to support the family in seeking justice.
“We are hopeful that justice will prevail,” said Akanbi. “We have been informed that two suspects of Fulani descent have been arrested and will soon appear in court.”
Akanbi also noted the financial difficulties the family faces in pursuing the case, as Sunlola left behind a wife and two children who are struggling to make ends meet. “They can only do so much with limited funds,” he added.
Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Adewale Osifeso, confirmed that the police had launched an investigation into the case and assured the public of updates as the inquiry progresses.
“The police are actively investigating the matter and will provide further updates,” Osifeso said.
The community leader, the Elero of Ilero, Oba Waliu Oyedele, called for calm among residents and urged them to allow the police to carry out their investigation without interference.
“We have a security committee led by a retired police officer. We are confident that those responsible for this killing will be brought to justice,” Oba Oyedele stated.
