EFCC Detains Ondo APC Governorship Aspirant Akinterinwa Post-Primary Election

Written by on April 23, 2024

In a recent development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Wale Akinterinwa, a gubernatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State. Akinterinwa, a former commissioner of finance under late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, participated in the APC governorship election in the state but was unsuccessful, losing to the incumbent governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Reports indicate that Akinterinwa’s detention by the EFCC is linked to allegations of mismanagement involving billions of Naira. Sources revealed that Akinterinwa had been summoned by the anti-graft body weeks ago for questioning but had purportedly been unavailable due to prior commitments. However, he eventually presented himself at the EFCC office in response to the summons on Thursday.

While the EFCC chose not to disclose the detention earlier to avoid influencing the APC primary, it’s clarified that Akinterinwa’s custody is unrelated to political motives. An EFCC source emphasized, “Akinterinwa voluntarily reported to the EFCC in Abuja. He was taken into custody for quizzing,” dispelling any speculation regarding political interference.

The source further elaborated, “Akinterinwa is still in our custody. We did not arrest or pick him up, but he came up to respond to our long-overdue invitation. I can tell you that his detention has no political undertone.”
