Edo State House of Assembly Initiates Impeachment Proceedings Against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu

Written by on March 7, 2024

In a significant development, the Edo State House of Assembly has served an impeachment notice to Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, amidst an ongoing power struggle between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku directed the clerk to serve the impeachment notice to Shaibu, giving him 7 days to respond. The move underscores the escalating tensions within the state’s political landscape.

The relationship between Shaibu and Governor Obaseki has deteriorated, with Shaibu’s ambition to succeed his boss believed to be a point of contention. Shaibu’s pursuit of his political ambitions despite Obaseki’s objections has strained their working relationship.

Shaibu’s legal challenge to the 2022 governorship primary election of the PDP, in which he claims to be the authentic candidate, has further exacerbated tensions within the party.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Europe Chapter, has cautioned Governor Obaseki against the impeachment move, urging all stakeholders to prioritize peace and reconciliation. Comrade Collins Idahosa emphasized the need for dialogue and urged Obaseki to lead efforts towards reconciliation for the stability and prosperity of Edo State.
