Written by on November 11, 2024

Edo Queens, the Nigerian champions, have made a perfect start to their 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League campaign, securing a dominant 3-0 victory over Ethiopian debutants CBE on Sunday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.

The win was powered by goals from Emem Peace, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Goodness Osigwe, who came off the bench to seal the victory in the second half.

The game saw Edo Queens take control early, with Peace opening the scoring just five minutes into the match. Despite a strong defensive effort from CBE, the Nigerian side managed to maintain their slim lead at halftime.

The second half saw Edo Queens ramp up their performance. Super Falcons striker Ijamilusi doubled the lead 10 minutes after the restart, and Osigwe added a third, further cementing the team’s dominance.

With the win, Edo Queens top their group on goal difference, ahead of debutants Masar FC of Egypt, who stunned defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the group’s opening fixture.

Next up for the Nigerian champions is a clash with Masar FC on Wednesday, followed by a match against Mamelodi Sundowns on November 16. The Edo Queens are looking to become the first Nigerian team to win the title, following in the footsteps of Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens, who participated in previous editions.

Aside from the prestige of competing, Edo Queens have already earned $150,000 in participation fees and stand to earn more as they progress in the competition, where the champions will take home $600,000.
