Edo State Governorship Election: 17 Parties Finalize Candidates’ List with INEC

Written by on March 27, 2024

Seventeen political parties have successfully met the deadline to submit their candidates’ lists for the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it will unveil the details of these candidates and their respective running mates on March 30, 2024.

Scheduled for September 21, 2024, the gubernatorial election has garnered significant attention as the political landscape in Edo State evolves. INEC plans to display copies of Form EC9, accompanied by all academic qualifications and relevant documents submitted by each candidate, at the state headquarters and 18 local government offices throughout the state.

Sam Olumekun, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Information and Education Committee, announced on Wednesday. He stated, “Following the completion of party primaries, 17 political parties have successfully uploaded their candidate nomination forms for the Edo State governorship election before the March 24, 2024, 6 pm deadline when the dedicated portal closed automatically. In accordance with Article 29 (3) of the 2022 Election Law, the Commission will publicly release personal information, including academic qualifications and other submitted documents, on Saturday, March 30, 2024.”

Olumekun urged Nigerians to scrutinize the published documents, emphasizing that any candidate with questionable credentials could face legal challenges. “We encourage Nigerians to review the information provided. Any candidate suspected of falsifying information can be legally challenged in a Federal High Court as stipulated in Section 29(5) of the Electoral Act 2022,” he added.

INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu recently expressed concerns over the contentious primaries within political parties, disrupting INEC’s operations and leading to unnecessary financial expenditures. Yakubu addressed these issues during INEC’s quarterly consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja.

Notably, the All Progressives Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Labor Party (LP) faced internal disputes during their primaries. APC had to conduct a second primary due to multiple winners, while PDP and LP also encountered parallel primary processes. Senator Monday Okpebholo emerged as the APC candidate for Edo State, Olumide Akpata secured the LP nomination, and Asue Ighodalo was chosen as the PDP candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election.
