Edo Governor Freezes State Bank Accounts, Orders Reversion of Ministry Name

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered an immediate freeze on all state-owned bank accounts, effective until further notice. This directive, issued Thursday by Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, mandates that commercial banks and heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) comply without delay.
“All state bank accounts with commercial banks have been frozen… not a single naira should be withdrawn from government coffers until further notice,” the statement warned. It added that any heads of MDAs or civil servants disregarding the order would face severe penalties.
The governor plans to evaluate the state’s financial records before determining next steps. Additionally, Okpebholo directed a reversion of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges to its former designation as the Ministry of Works, a change made under former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
He criticized the previous administration’s choice of the title, stating, “It is odd to name a government institution the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, especially when not a single bridge was built… not even a pedestrian bridge.”
Okpebholo indicated more reviews of past administration actions are forthcoming to ensure the state’s best interests.
