The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has announced the lifting of sanctions imposed on Niger Republic, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea. This decision, announced at the Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS in Abuja, reflects a commitment to humanitarian considerations, particularly in light of the upcoming Lenten period and Ramadan.
President Tinubu, who serves as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, emphasized the regional bloc’s dedication to improving the lives of West African citizens through cooperation and dialogue. He underscored the importance of solidarity and compassion during religious observance, urging a spirit of fraternity and goodwill among member states.
Addressing the suspension of sanctions, President Tinubu highlighted the need to foster unity and cooperation within the region, emphasizing the shared objectives of security, social stability, democratic governance, and economic prosperity. He emphasized that the decision to lift sanctions was made to promote dialogue and reconciliation, rather than advance any ulterior motives.
As part of the suspension of sanctions, President Tinubu called for facilitating humanitarian aid to affected nations, particularly vulnerable populations. He also emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to resuming the export of electricity to Niger, signalling a renewed commitment to regional cooperation and mutual support.
In conclusion, President Tinubu called upon the leadership of Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger to embrace dialogue and cooperation, urging a return to brotherly relations within the ECOWAS community.
