The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a statement urging organised labour to reconsider its planned nationwide protests scheduled for February 27 and 28. The DSS emphasized the need for dialogue and negotiation to address economic challenges, cautioning against actions that could escalate tensions and lead to widespread violence.
The DSS expressed concern over the planned protests, citing potential security risks and the possibility of crisis and violence. They urged labour leaders to prioritize peace and public order. Highlighting ongoing efforts by all levels of government to address economic difficulties, the DSS urged citizens to give authorities the chance to handle the current challenges through peaceful means.
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining internal stability and unity, the DSS warned against exploiting fault lines and engaging in divisive actions that could jeopardize national peace. The statement called on parents, guardians, and various sectors of society to discourage inimical acts and promote peaceful coexistence. It urged political parties, religious and traditional institutions, civil society groups, and others to demonstrate leadership and statesmanship during challenging times.
Lastly, the DSS reaffirmed its opposition to violence as a means of addressing societal issues and pledged to collaborate with other security agencies to maintain lasting peace in the country. The DSS’s statement reflects a concerted effort to prevent potential unrest and violence amid labour’s planned protests. By advocating for dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances, the DSS aims to safeguard public safety and uphold national stability in Nigeria.
