Driving Excellence: Caleb University Embraces Strategic Vision for Global Relevance

Caleb University’s Colloquium for the 2024/2025 academic year, held on September 11th and 12th, concluded with a series of impactful sessions designed to enhance the university’s academic and global standing. Themed “Driving Excellence for Global Relevance,” the event featured keynote speakers, interactive sessions, and presentations focused on positioning the institution for future growth and development.
The colloquium opened with an inspiring address from Vice Chancellor Professor Nosa Owens-Ibie, who set a reflective and motivational tone with his remarks. He emphasized the importance of integrity and commitment, urging faculty and staff to eschew unethical practices and instead become valuable assets to the university. Professor Owens-Ibie highlighted that the university’s success hinges on the collective effort and record of service of its members.
One of the central highlights was Mr. Adesina Abubakre’s presentation on “Metrics Gap for Strategic Input: Bridging the Resource Gaps for Sustainable Strategic Growth.” He outlined the need to align the university’s strategic goals with resource allocation, advocating for increased external funding, prioritized key projects, and phased implementations to ensure effective use of resources for both immediate and long-term objectives.
Mr. Mayokun Olumeru, the University Registrar, discussed “Administrative Support for Global Excellence,” stressing that achieving global relevance begins with excelling locally. He emphasized the importance of robust administrative functions, technology leverage, and effective communication to support the university’s global goals.
Professor Olalekan Asikhia, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Strategy & Administration, highlighted the critical attitudes and values necessary to drive excellence within the institution. He urged staff to reflect on their attitudes and strive for excellence, noting that a commitment to excellence enhances efficiency, builds reputation, and fosters employee engagement.
The Keynote speakers included Professor Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), and Rachel Harvey, Global Engagement Officer at Lancaster University, UK. Professor Okebukola advocated for a diverse and inclusive student body and proposed the creation of a task force to develop a strategic plan aimed at elevating the university’s ranking to among the top three in Nigeria and top 100 in Africa by 2030. He emphasized the need for regular progress reviews to keep stakeholders informed.
Rachel Harvey provided insights on improving global rankings and relevance, highlighting the importance of showcasing research outcomes, funding achievements, and alumni success. She recommended leveraging online platforms and adopting a “show and not just tell” approach to demonstrate the university’s initiatives and successes.
The colloquium concluded with a motivational closing address from the Vice Chancellor, encouraging staff to embrace personal and professional growth as the new academic year approaches. The event was marked by a celebratory atmosphere, with attendees enjoying a selection of delicacies.
