Several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and journalists gathered at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to demand the release of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist currently detained by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).
Videos circulating on X.com showed the protesters carrying banners with messages such as “Free Daniel Ojukwu,” “No to a police state,” “Journalism is not a crime,” and “Stop the impunity.”
Ojukwu was transferred to the National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja by the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, on Sunday.
He had gone missing on May 1, with his phone turned off, leaving his whereabouts unknown to colleagues, family, and friends.
Despite efforts by the FIJ to file a missing person report at police stations, Ojukwu’s location remained undisclosed.
Soyombo, a representative of the FIJ, expressed frustration over the situation, stating that they were doing everything possible behind the scenes to secure Ojukwu’s release.
The detention of Ojukwu has sparked widespread condemnation, with activists and journalists calling for his immediate release and denouncing his abduction as unconstitutional and illegal.
Among the protesters were legal practitioner Deji Adeyanju and pro-democracy activist Omoyele Sowore, who also ran as a presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
